The GS65 Stealth Thin delivers everything I want in a gaming laptop. It has the convenience and portability of a productivity notebook - light and thin enough that I can throw it in my backpack, take it to meetings and use it comfortably on the couch - married to the internal guts of a gaming PC - powerful enough to play the latest games at high or maximum settings once the workday is over.

It has a sleek matte black aluminum case with golden accents that feels sturdy and luxurious - and luckily lacks unpleasant game aesthetics. Best of all, in addition to a slim 18 mm thickness, the 4.9 mm thin edges of the screen provide an overall enclosure about one inch smaller than that of most 15-inch laptops.

The GS65 does not disappoint in terms of performance. The basic specification includes a GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU, but I recommend the GTX 1070 (again Max-Q) model for a few hundred dollars more. It brings with it an upgraded SSD and Killer wireless network. With this specification, the GS65 can maintain frame rates above 60 fps in most of the latest games with maximum settings. And by adjusting a few settings and turning off some of the more demanding, less visually impactful options, you can easily push your frames up to 100 fps and higher, using the system's 144Hz screen.

There are also other nice details: a SteelSeries keyboard that is solid and responsive (and RGB-lit, if you find that important), a responsive touchpad and a webcam that is placed at the top of the screen, happily avoiding the incredibly unflattering "nose -cam "that can be found on most thin-bezeled laptops such as the Dell XPS 13.

The only gaming feature missing here is G-Sync, but that is an offense, because the omission allows both a lower price tag and a longer battery life, which lasts up to an entire day of email, surfing on the internet and streaming video.

With the new Blade 15, introduced earlier this year, Razer has finally overtaken the competition for a great gaming laptop. Solid construction, slim body, elegant design, long battery life, thin edges, 144Hz screen and internals powerful enough to play the latest games. That means an Intel Core i7-8750H processor combined with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q GPU.

What distinguishes the Blade 15 from the competition are the details. Its aluminum housing is the most solid and flex-resistant of all the laptops that we have recently tested, and with a size of about half a millimeter it is also the thinnest. Of course that half a millimeter difference is largely negligent in terms of perception - more impressive is the overall solid feeling of the body, which according to Razer CNC is milled from a single block of aluminum. The clamshell opens, the touchpad is noticeably larger than its colleagues and the keyboard is flanked on both sides by large speakers.

We are currently testing the new Razer Blade Stealth and should make a statement about it soon. It is likely that the 15 will be removed from this list.

Not everyone needs the thinnest or most powerful gaming laptop. Sometimes it is still thin and still powerful. A good balance between portability, performance and price is the Acer Predator Triton 500, a Max-Q notebook that emerged from the woodwork somewhere to impress our dedicated team of hardware testers in the very best PC Gamer lab. With an RTX 2080, the model we reviewed is priced somewhere in the middle for $ 2,499. However, you can find an RTX 2060 version for $ 1,799.

Either way, it's worth seeing, because it can push Metro Exodus at the highest settings, with ray tracing on, with an average pace of 56 fps. Acer's Predator Helios 300 offers an incredible value proposition. At just over a large, sometimes less if you can find it on sale, it offers a 6 GB GTX 1060 graphics card that can lock 60 fps at near-maximum settings in most games in the last few years. The system has no nice screen features like G-Sync, although you can get a model with a refresh rate of 144 Hz and you will probably want to think about investing in a large HDD to back up the 256 GB SSD . But those minor problems don't mean much if you take the super-affordable price tag into account.

The Acer Predator Helios 300 is the best budget gaming laptop that you can buy without sacrificing the functions you need from a portable gaming device. The Aero 15X from Gigabyte was the first thin Max-Q laptop I noticed and the updated version of the Aero 15X v8 from 2018 remains a promising item in the field and solves most of the problems I had with its predecessor while I kept everything that I love. In the first place, the keyboard works much better after a driver update and the screen has been updated to a spicy 144 Hz panel.

Compared to MSI's GS65 and the Razer Blade 15, the Aero 15X has a less attractive body with sharp edges, but it wins in the productivity category due to a larger 94 Whr battery. In practice - that is, our streaming video test - that a larger battery lasts more than six hours, compared to the four and a half of the GS65. With almost identical internals, the game performance is comparable to that of the GS65. The biggest difference, apart from the body design and the battery, is that the Aero 15X can be equipped with a 4K screen. I recommend that you continue to play with the high refresh rate 1080p screen if gaming is your primary concern, but 4K is a nice option for users with high productivity who can take advantage of the extra pixels.

For gaming we use the built-in benchmarks on Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Total War: Warhammer II and Ghost Revon: Wildlands by Tom Clancy. Tests are performed at 1080p using the highest available graphic preset, with V-sync and G-Sync disabled. All tests are performed multiple times to ensure that thermal limitation does not occur. In the event that the scores decrease in subsequent tests, the lower (braised) scores are used.
