The best PC games right now

In this list you will find the best PC games that we now play: recent single player hits, thriving esports and a few modern classics that would enhance any game library. We will continue to update this list as new games are released, removing older favorites and replacing them with our latest obsessions. Instead of an ever-expanding list that extends deep into the past, we are shooting at a practical answer to the question: "What new PC game should I get?"

If you are looking for a more extensive list of our favorite games from the past decades, check out our annual Top 100 list or our list of the most important PC games. Do you need a new system to play these games? Here is our advice on what kind of gaming PC you should get.

What to play now:

  • Apex Legends
  • Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
  • Kill the Spire
  • Resident Evil 2
  • Rainbow Six Siege
  • Wargroove
  • Fortnite Battle Royale
  • Into the Breach
  • CS: GO
  • Warframe
  • Dusk
  • Battlefield 5
  • PUBG
  • Return of the Obra Dinn

Apex Legends is by far the best new fighting generous game, a comprehensive improvement on what has come before. First things first: it is free to play and micro transactions are only cosmetic. Beyond that, the non-verbal communication systems are of the next level - you can even collaborate with strangers who don't use microphones - and it brings character qualities largely to the BR. If you play PUBG or Fortnite, or can't get into those games, but like the idea of a team-based Battle Royale, then definitely give Apex a chance - you can get it from Origin.

Meanwhile, horror fans have good news: the Resident Evil 2 remake is excellent. In his review of Resident Evil 2, Andy calls it "a tense, challenging and beautiful remake of a classic survival horror game, and with enough fresh ideas to make it feel exciting new."

If you're looking for a rainy Sunday afternoon with a 'one more turn' obsession instead of zombies, Slay the Spire, which just emerged from Early Access, is your game. Evan explains why in his 92% rating.

In the same vein, our 2018 game of the year, Into the Breach, is a run-based strategy game that seems simple - enemies telegraph every move they are about to make - but it is a series of tactical risk vs. reward puzzles that are very satisfying to solve.

Meanwhile, throwback FPS Dusk is amazingly fun and Hitman 2 has kept the PC Gamer team obsessed with the series, although smart stealth is more the game there, while Dusk is pure speed and bombardment. If you want to slow things down for a more meditative single player experience, Return of the Obra Dinn was our choice for Best Puzzle Game of 2018.
